Wrigley Field to Host Four College Hockey Games
January 2025 Frozen Confines comes days after NHL Winter Classic in Chicago
Posted On: August 15, 2024 By :Wrigley Field in Chicago will host a pair of college hockey doubleheaders in January 2025, the Cubs and Big Ten Conference announced on Thursday.
The event will be known as The Frozen Confines: Big Ten Hockey Series. On January 3, Penn State will face Notre Dame along with a game between Ohio State and Michigan. On January 4, Wisconsin and Michigan State will play along with a women’s Western Collegiate Hockey Association game between Ohio State and Wisconsin.
The weekend follows the NHL Winter Classic between the St. Louis Blues and Chicago Blackhawks on December 31, 2024, the second NHL Winter Classic to be held at Wrigley Field. Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State and Wisconsin each spent time in the Top 20 last season with four of the teams finishing in the Top 10. Since 2022, all six schools have been to the NCAA Tournament with Michigan advancing to three consecutive Frozen Fours.
On the women’s side, Ohio State and Wisconsin have combined to win the past five national championships and have met in the last two NCAA Championship games.
Big Ten Network will carry all four games live. The announcement was made on Thursday at Wrigley Field by Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti, Chicago Cubs President of Business Operations Crane Kenney and Chicago Blackhawks President of Business Operations Jaime Faulkner. Tickets for the Frozen Confines go on sale to the general public on August 30.
