Wrexham Selects Populous for Stadium Improvements
Initial focus will be on a permanent, 5,500-seat Kop stand
Posted On: October 30, 2024 By :Wrexham AFC have appointed Populous to create a plan for the club’s STōK Cae Ras stadium, with initial focus on the redesign of the new 5,500 capacity Kop stand.
Wrexham, currently third in the League One standings, initially revealed plans to build a new Kop stand as part of the wider Wrexham Gateway proposal in 2022, replacing the terrace that has been empty and inoperative for more than a decade. The Kop, which will include provision for safe standing, hospitality and accessible seating, will be completed in time for the UEFA European Under-19 Championship final tournament in 2026.
“We are determined to ensure the new Kop stand and the future vision of the STōK Cae Ras satisfies the needs and expectations of our fans and the local community,” said Michael Williamson, Wrexham AFC chief executive officer. “This is an exciting time for the club, our supporters and the city as we continue our upward momentum.”
The STōK Cae Ras is the world’s oldest international football stadium still in continuous use, having hosted Wales’ first international home game against Scotland on March 5, 1877. Wrexham played their first match at the ground in October 1864.
“We’re extremely proud to be appointed to work on the new Kop stand and to explore the potential for a wider vision and masterplan for the future STōK Cae Ras,” said Declan Sharkey, global director and senior principal at Populous. “Our aim is to create a home for Wrexham’s passionate fans and the community that pays tribute to the heritage and traditions of the club and the city itself. The Kop stand will be the epicenter of the atmosphere at the ground on matchday, while incorporating enhanced facilities that can be used every day throughout the year.”
After a series of delays, the club built a temporary Kop stand at the end of 2023. It was further expanded during the summer by 800 seats, taking the overall capacity to 13,341. Owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have made it a priority to get as many seats into the stadium as possible, as the Red Dragons have sold out nearly every home game this season.
