Vlad Marinescu Re-Elected International Esports Federation President
American will serve remainder of existing term that lasts until 2022
Posted On: January 4, 2021 By :Vlad Marinescu, the head of the United States Esports Federation, has been re-elected as International Esports Federation President after Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa Al-Nahyan stood down from the race.
Marinescu received 91 percent of the votes at the virtual IESF Ordinary General Meeting. He was promoted to the role atop the IESF after Colin Webster stepped down as president in May and will serve the remainder of the existing term which concludes in 2022.
Marinescu was elected as IESF vice-president before replacing Webster, who deemed that the coronavirus pandemic made it difficult for him to carry out his duties from South Africa. Marinescu is also chief media and marketing officer of the International Judo Federation and was previously the director general of SportAccord.
Founded in 2008, the IESF is the oldest governing body claiming to have responsibility for esports. Seven National Federations from three different continents joined earlier this month, bringing the total number of members up to 100, and the IESF recently worked with the Asian Electronic Sports Federation to have esports included in the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China as an official medal sport.
