The United States Bowling Congress Open Championships will head to South Carolina for the first time in 2028, as Greenville and the Greenville Convention Center will host the 124th edition of the event.
“We’re excited to officially announce Greenville, South Carolina, as the host of the 2028 USBC Open Championships,” USBC Executive Director Chad Murphy said. “Our bowlers have expressed a desire to see the tournament head to new areas of the country, and our partners at VisitGreenvilleSC, the City of Greenville and Greenville County have been incredible in helping this come together.”
The Open Championships attract approximately 55,000 bowlers from around the world each year. The 2024 Open Championships is wrapping up in Las Vegas, which includes more than 11,000 teams and 55,000 bowlers at South Point Bowling Plaza from February 23 through July 29.
The tournament generates a prize fund of approximately $5-7 million for competitors across three average-based divisions. It typically runs from March through July, with competition held daily. With this announcement, the event now has its host venue set for the rest of the decade. It will travel to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in 2025, and then be in Reno, Nevada, in 2026 and 2029, with return trips to Las Vegas in 2027 and 2030.
Murphy said during the April 2024 USBC Convention and Annual Meeting that Greenville was on the horizon for 2028 and that was made official at a press conference Tuesday at Spare Time Greenville. The announcement included remarks from Murphy, VisitGreenvilleSC President and Chief Executive Officer Heath Dillard and Greenville Convention Center General Manager Matt Hollander.
“Bringing world-class sporting events like this to Greenville has been a priority for our organization,” Dillard said. “We are looking forward to welcoming the USBC Open Championships bowlers and avid fans to enjoy all our community has to offer.”
