Jerry Richardson Stadium will be getting a $60 million expansion for the first phase of enhancing the UNC Charlotte football stadium after the University of North Carolina Board of Governors approved the financial outlay on Thursday.
Stadium capacity will increase to 18,170 with the first phase of expansion, with plans in motion for further expansion to a capacity of 21,000 as additional funds are secured. The phased approach enables Charlotte Athletics to proceed immediately with the project, while fundraising continues for subsequent phases.
“We are grateful for the private and public investments in this expansion, particularly from generous donors and the match from the NC General Assembly,” said UNC Chancellor Sharon L. Gaber. “Their support allows us to pursue this ambitious endeavor, underscoring UNC Charlotte’s dedication to providing a top-tier athletic environment for our students, alumni and the broader community.”
Notable additions to the 49ers’ stadium will include seven luxury suites, club seats, loge boxes, ledge seats and additional general seating. The club level will serve as a team dining area and meeting facility as well. The project builds upon the groundwork laid during the Advance Planning phase initiated in 2023.
