Tim Miller remembers the precise moment he knew that cycling’s 2015 UCI Road World Championships had exceeded even his high expectations. It was a Wednesday in the middle of the event, and Miller, chief operating officer of race organizer Richmond 2015, was driving a support vehicle during the men’s elite time trial.
As the race threaded through the rural Virginia countryside, Miller noticed that all along the course there were bands playing and people throwing parties and cheering the racers. “It blew my mind,” he said. While such fan excitement is common in Europe, to see that level of involvement mid-week in the United States was an eye-opener.
