Mike Plant
Posted On: March 28, 2013 By :The U.S. Speedskating Board of Directors has appointed Mike Plant as interim president. Plant takes over the 14-person board effective immediately and is expected to be confirmed as president at the board’s meeting in May.
Plant, a former speedskater and member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic Team, is the executive vice-president of Major League Baseball’s Atlanta Braves and has served two lengthy terms on the U.S. Olympic Committee’s Board of Directors. He comes to the USS board at a time of uncertainty for the organization. In March, two women brought forward allegations that Olympian and past USS President Andy Gabel sexually abused them when they were 15 years old, claims Gabel has denied. A group of athletes has also filed a grievance with the USOC asking them to take control of the organization, calling USS unfit to serve as the sport’s national governing body, claims the governing body is challenging as well.
“This is a positive step for U.S. Speedskating,” said Mark Greenwald, USS executive director. “We have certainly had our ups and downs over the last several months, but having someone with Mike’s experience on board will go a long way to putting us back on the right track. Mike brings years of leadership experience and a proven track record of success and that is exactly what we need.”
