“The Sandlot,” a classic baseball movie that has stood the test of time since its release in 1993, is finding ways to give back to youth baseball more than three decades later.
The Play Forever Project — founded by Sandlot cast members Grant Gelt (Bertram Grover Weeks), Victor Dimattia (Timmy Timmons), and Shane Obedzinski (Tommy ‘Repeat’ Timmons) — will be in Salt Lake City on April 11 to deliver a check donation to Rose Park Baseball.
The check presentation will take place during the pregame of the Salt Lake Bees game against the Reno Aces scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at Daybreak Field at America First Square (one of SportsTravel’s new venues to watch in 2025). The trio of cast members will also participate in the ceremonial first pitch.
Rose Park Baseball is located at Riverside Park — site of the home field of the “The Sandlot” gang’s rival Tigers — and located near the actual famous sandlot itself that still exists. The non-profit organization is a community-driven, volunteer-run league dedicated for athletes ages 4–15.
“We at Play Forever believe that sports build character and teach valuable life skills,” said Gelt. “However, we also recognize the many barriers that make it difficult, if not impossible, for young people to get involved. That’s why Shane, Victor and I created Play Forever — to ensure kids nationwide have equitable access to sports.”
The Play Forever Project supports people of all genders, races, orientations and abilities from all socioeconomic backgrounds. It works to provide an opportunity to anyone interested in participating in youth sports or pursuing a career in sports.
