Super Bowl LXI Awarded to SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles
The game will take place between World Cup action in 2026 and the 2028 Summer Olympic Games
Posted On: December 13, 2023 By :Super Bowl LXI in 2027 will be played at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, the second time in a five-year span in which the home for the Rams and Chargers will host the NFL’s showpiece event.
The NFL owners voted on Wednesday to award Super Bowl LXI in 2027 to Los Angeles during the league meetings in Dallas. It will be the ninth time the game is held in the greater Los Angeles region, third-most among any city behind New Orleans and Miami.
“We are very excited to bring the Super Bowl back to Los Angeles for the second time in five years,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. “The city did an outstanding job hosting Super Bowl 56 in the incredible SoFi Stadium and we believe that Super Bowl 61 will be even more memorable. The Los Angeles Rams, the Los Angeles Host Committee and many other outstanding partners will help create an unforgettable week of events culminating in Super Bowl Sunday in 2027 that will celebrate the region as an epicenter of sports, entertainment and culture.”
Los Angeles hosted the Super Bowl I in 1967 at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum; the Coliseum also hosted the Super Bowl in 1973 before the Rose Bowl in Pasadena hosted in 1977, 1980, 1983, 1987 and 1993.
As part of Super Bowl LXI activities, the Los Angeles region will host a slate of events that make up Super Bowl Week. According to an independent study, Super Bowl LVI generated between $234.3 million and $477.5 million for Los Angeles County. The 2022 Super Bowl, won by the hometown Rams over the Cincinnati Bengals, was played in front of a capacity crowd at the end of the pandemic with no capacity restrictions — all attendees were to be given a KN95 mask upon entry and fans had to either show proof of full vaccination or a negative test up to 48 hours before a game. Fans were required to wear a mask at SoFi Stadium except when eating or drinking, regardless of vaccination status, although the mandate was not enforced.
“After 29 years, Super Bowl LVI was an amazing event that delivered significant economic and community impact for the Los Angeles region,” said Kathryn Schloessman, president and chief executive officer of the Los Angeles Sports & Entertainment Commission. “We’re thrilled to welcome back the NFL for Super Bowl LXI at SoFi Stadium in 2027 and look forward to building on the foundation we established, providing local diverse businesses the opportunity to compete for contracts and using the spotlight to benefit the community organizations doing good work in our region.”
SoFi Stadium also hosted the 2023 College Football Playoff National Championship. The 2027 Super Bowl will create a massive three-year run for the city of Los Angeles, as it will host World Cup games in 2026 and then be the site of the 2028 Olympic Summer Games.
The NFL now has its marquee event set for the next four years. Super Bowl LVIII will take place February 11, 2024, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas; Super Bowl LIX heads to the Superdome in New Orleans on February 9, 2025; and the game returns to California with Super Bowl LX on February 8, 2026, at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.
“We are grateful to Commissioner Goodell and our partners at the other 31 teams for this opportunity to once again elevate our league’s biggest moment,” said Los Angeles Rams Owner and Chairman Stan Kroenke. “More so, we are honored that Super Bowl will return to Los Angeles and Inglewood for a second time in five years and excited to build upon the substantial impact to local businesses and community organizations that resulted from hosting Super Bowl LVI.”
