Softball, especially fastpitch, remains popular as a participation sport, despite being dropped from the Olympic program after the 2008 Olympic Summer Games. Last year, baseball and softball teamed up in an effort to regain a spot on the 2020 Olympic program, but their bid failed when it came to a vote by the International Olympic Committee. Nevertheless, the sport’s leaders remain confident softball will continue to flourish and, in fact, popular events at the amateur, collegiate and professional level suggest there is a stable base on which to build.
