Charlotte County government has named Sean Doherty as tourism director effective September 23, dropping the interim title that he had served under and charging him with the tourism marketing efforts of the Punta Gorda/Englewood Beach Visitor & Convention Bureau.
“I’ve been honored to serve Charlotte County while working alongside a team of dedicated professionals in the tourism department,” Doherty said. “Over the past 15 years we’ve overcome a variety of obstacles while still elevating the Punta Gorda/Englewood Beach brand to new heights. I look forward to the challenge of continuing that trajectory and leading the department to the next level,”
Doherty joined the tourism department in 2005 and served as the sales and sports marketing manager. He has helped bring the Charlotte Harbor Regatta, SpringFling Women’s Collegiate Lacrosse, Snowbird Baseball Classic, Sugar Bert Boxing National Qualifiers and the USA BMX Sunshine State National to the destination.
Prior to joining the organization, Doherty served as vice president of events for the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation. He worked on a Super Bowl, men’s and women’s NCAA Final Four basketball tournaments and the NCCA Women’s Volleyball Final Four.
A native Floridian, Doherty holds a master’s degree in sports management from the University of Florida. He is a 2016 graduate of Leadership Charlotte and is recognized as a certified sports event executive by the Sports Events & Tourism Association.
