Jim Scherr, the commissioner of the newly formed National Collegiate Hockey Conference and former CEO of the U.S. Olympic Committee will reportedly take on the role of chief operating officer for the 2015 European Olympic Games in Baku, Azerbaijan. Scherr will work under Azad Rahimov, Azerbaijan’s sports minister and chief executive of Baku 2015, and Mehriban Aliyeva, the country’s First Lady who chairs the organizing committee, according to a report in Inside the Games.
Reached by phone in Moscow, Scherr said he has not yet accepted the position and had no further comment.
Scherr became the first commissioner of the Colorado Springs-based NCHL when he accepted the job in January 2012. The conference, which recently unveiled a new logo and named its first board of directors on May 8, will begin play with eight universities in fall 2013. Before joining the conference, Scherr served as chief executive of 776 Original Marketing in Colorado Springs and chief executive of the USOC from 2003–2009. He also served as the head of USA Wrestling from 1990–2000.
