The World Cup of Quidditch will return to the United States in 2020 and be hosted by Richmond, Virginia, after the city’s success in hosting the inaugural International Quidditch Association Pan-American Games in July.

Richmond won the right to host by earning 10 of the 18 votes during an IQA Assembly of Members. Getxo, Spain, received seven votes with one member abstaining. The event will be jointly hosted by the IQA, United States Quidditch, Richmond Region Tourism, and Major League Quidditch. The exact date will be announced later, but the tournament will be held in July 2020.

“We are overjoyed to be hosting IQA World Cup and are excited to work on another international quidditch tournament with Richmond Region Tourism,” said United States Quidditch Executive Director Sarah Woolsey.

Richmond has previously hosted the 2019 Major League Quidditch Championship as well as the Pan-American Games. The 2020 event will be held at Glover Park, which will have four lighted multi-purpose fields that can fit eight quidditch pitches.

“Sports tourism continues to make a significant impact on the region’s economy,” said Jack Berry, Richmond Region Tourism president and CEO. “We’re thrilled the International Quidditch Association has chosen the region to host the IQA World Cup 2020 and we can’t wait to welcome some of the best quidditch athletes from around the world to the Richmond region next year.”
