The Providence Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau has promoted Jonathan Walker to senior director of sports sales within the Rhode Island Sports Commission.
Walker, who joined the team in 2019, served as sports sales manager before a promotion to director of sports sales in July 2023. In his role, he oversees the sales, marketing and servicing efforts related to sports groups utilizing Rhode Island as a base for sports-related events and meetings.
Walker stepped up after the devastating loss of his mentor and longtime RISC Executive Director John Gibbons, who passed away in June 2023. In the 2024 fiscal year, Walker has continued to promote sports tourism in Rhode Island, leading the RISC to book 67 sports-related events and 65,000 room nights, bringing in more than 140,000 attendees and a direct spend over $45 million.
“I’m thrilled to have been promoted to Senior Director of Sports Sales at the Rhode Island Sports Commission,” Walker said. “Our team’s hard work in attracting new business and securing existing clients has not only brought visitation and revenue to our partners but also showcased the supportive communities in Rhode Island that have invested in top-notch sports facilities. Our destination’s commitment to exceptional customer service and hospitality remains unwavering as we continue to grow and expand our impact in the sports tourism industry. It’s been an incredible year for RISC, and we are excited for what’s to come.”
Walker began his career in sports and entertainment in 2014 with PSE Agency, a Rhode Island-based sports marketing firm that owns and operates the Providence Bruins. He later worked with the Pawtucket Red Sox and the TPG Hotels and Resorts-managed Hilton Garden Inn Providence before joining the PWCVB.
