The Prefontaine Classic has announced its dates for the 2025 edition, as the event returns to Hayward Field at the University of Oregon on July 5, 2025, for the 50th edition of the meet.
The announcement comes one day after the end of the 2024 Wanda Diamond League at the Allianz Memorial Van Damme in Brussels. The Prefontaine Classic has been a member of the Wanda Diamond League series since 2010.
The first Prefontaine Classic took place on June 7, 1975, at Hayward Field. The meet was originally named the Hayward Restoration Meet and dedicated as “a living memorial” to Steve Prefontaine, a legendary runner at the University of Oregon who passed away a week prior in a car accident.
Since then, the meet has established itself as a home for the world’s best athletes, hosting competitors from over 150 countries during its history. The success of the Prefontaine Classic led to it becoming a founding member of the Wanda Diamond League circuit in 2010 and hosting the Wanda Diamond League Final in 2023. That same 2023 edition of the Pre Classic earned the highest competition performance score ever recorded by World Athletics, a mark the 2024 championship failed to exceed.
In addition to the 2023 Diamond League Finals, Howard Field also recently hosted the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials this summer.
