Omaha Scores Big as a Premier Sports Destination

Several prestigious events call Omaha home, including the NCAA Men’s College World Series (hosted since 1950), Asics Presidents’ Day Classic volleyball tournament and Triple Crown’s SlumpBuster® (the world’s largest youth baseball tournament). Omaha has hosted NCAA men’s basketball championship first and second rounds, U.S. Olympic Team Trials for swimming four times, U.S. Olympic Team Trials for curling twice, FEI World Cup Finals (world-class indoor dressage, show jumping and vaulting) twice, the inaugural Pro Volleyball Federation Championship and several other events.
Omaha’s outdoor venues for sporting events offer rich possibilities. Charles Schwab Field Omaha is home to the NCAA Men’s College World Series and the Creighton Bluejays men’s baseball team. The multi-use stadium is open year-round. First Interstate Bank SportsPlex, which opened in 2023, features six grass soccer fields, four grass baseball/softball fields and an AllPlay Complex, a barrier-free field designed for children with adaptive needs. The facility is part of an ongoing $52 million project. More sports venues are coming. Alliance Sports Development, a $300 million mixed-use project with a 7,000-seat soccer stadium, will be a new home for the city’s professional soccer team, Union Omaha, in spring 2026. Tranquility Park, scheduled for 2027 completion, will have 16 synthetic turf multi-purpose flat fields and 10 synthetic turf baseball/softball fields. The surrounding area will have hotels and restaurants.
Omaha’s indoor athletic facilities are also top-notch. CHI Health Center Omaha is the city’s convention center and arena, featuring an 18,300-seat arena home to Omaha’s women’s pro volleyball team, the Omaha Supernovas and Creighton men’s basketball. The venue is minutes from the airport and over 3,500 hotel rooms. Baxter Arena is where the University of Omaha Mavericks men’s hockey, men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball teams play. It has hosted the U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Curling and the U.S.A. Wrestling Girls Folkstyle Nationals. Liberty First Credit Union Arena, seating up to 5,100, is home to Omaha Lancers hockey and Omaha Beef football. The facility has hosted the Curling World Cup and FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix. Union Bank & Trust Sports Complex, a 134,000-square-foot facility, has 12 basketball courts and eight volleyball courts. D.J. Sokol Arena is home to Creighton Bluejays women’s basketball and volleyball teams. This 78,000-square-foot facility with a 2,500-person gym capacity has been a venue for TBT – The Basketball Tournament and NCAA Women’s Volleyball Championship first and second rounds. Moylan Iceplex can accommodate a range of ice sports with both a NHL and Olympic-sized ice sheet.
