Olympic Villages Open to Athletes
Posted On: February 2, 2018 By :The PyeongChang 2018 Organizing Committee has opened the two Olympic Villages that will be used for athletes and officials during the Olympic Winter Games. The PyeongChang Olympic Village will be the home for more than 3,500 athletes and officials in the mountain cluster, while the Gangneung Olympic Village will house more than 2,400 athletes and officials in the coastal cluster.
IOC President Thomas Bach, who has arrived in South Korea, participated in the opening of the venues along with senior members of the PyeongChang 2018 Organizing Committee, officials from the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, Gangwon Province, the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee, sponsors and other local dignitaries.
“We are delighted to welcome everyone here today for the official opening of the PyeongChang Olympic Village,” said POCOG President Lee Hee-beom during opening remarks in the mountain village. “Construction began on both residences back in 2015 and to see our first athletes now making themselves at home here is a very proud moment for us all. We hope that all athletes and officials living here, and in Gangneung, will feel comfortable and well cared for, and make many happy memories along the way.”
The villages each have a plaza area, residence area and operating area and feature services such as a hair salon, post office, bank, convenience store, fitness center and religious center. The main dining halls will operate 24 hours and offer more than 450 items. After the Games, both villages will covert to residences that have been sold in full.
