The Sun Belt Conference announced today that Montgomery, Alabama, will be the host site for the Sun Belt Conference annual baseball championship from 2020–2024. The agreement was reached between the Sun Belt Conference, the Central Alabama Sports Commission and the city of Montgomery for the tournament to be staged at Riverwalk Stadium.
“Montgomery is a city rich with history and more recently it has seen a revitalization of its downtown area that will make for a perfect home for the Sun Belt Baseball Championship,” said Sun Belt Conference Commissioner Karl Benson. “We are thrilled to continue our relationship with the city of Montgomery as it has provided a first-class experience for fans and student-athletes in recent years with our partnership in the Raycom Media Camellia Bowl. The Sun Belt is excited about the future of the baseball championship at Riverwalk Stadium starting in 2020.”
Riverwalk Stadium opened in 2004 and seats 4,500 but can accommodate up to 7,000 fans with general admission tickets. The stadium, built from a converted railroad station, is home to the Minor League Montgomery Biscuits.
“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to continue to build our relationship with the Sun Belt Conference,” said Johnny Williams, executive director of the Central Alabama Sports Commission. “Over the past five years, they have been a great partner in the Raycom Media Camellia Bowl and we look forward to expanding that partnership and their footprint in our community with the Sun Belt Conference Baseball Championship.”
The 2018 championship will be staged in Lafayette, Louisiana. The 2019 event will be held in Conway, South Carolina.
