The National Football League has selected Minneapolis to host Super Bowl LII in 2018. The game will be played at a new downtown stadium under construction that is expected to be complete by the start of the 2016 season. The city last hosted the Super Bowl in 1992.
Minneapolis beat out New Orleans in the final round of voting among NFL owners at a league meeting in Atlanta. Indianapolis was also vying for the game, but was eliminated in the first round of voting.
The new covered venue under construction in Minneapolis will replace the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. The Minnesota Vikings will play the next two seasons outdoors at the University of Minnesota while the new stadium is completed.
New Orleans, which had never lost a bid for the game, was bidding to host its 11th Super Bowl, and the first since a power outage delayed the 2013 game for 34 minutes at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The bid was designed to coincide with the 300th anniversary of the founding of the city.
Indianapolis would have hosted the game at Lucas Oil Stadium, which hosted the 2012 event.
