Major League Soccer has set a record for regular season attendance with over 11 million fans through this past weekend and with a final full slate of games scheduled for October 19 before the postseason begins.
MLS’ previous record was 2023 with 10,900,804. There are 16 matches left in the 2024 regular season, with two over the coming weekend before a full slate on Decision Day before the postseason starts in late October.
This year’s attendance marks the third year in a row where MLS has drawn more than 10 million fans and eclipses 11 million regular season fans for the first time in league history. The rise in attendance earlier this season was noted among other topics by MLS Executive Vice President Camilo Durana on the SportsTravel Podcast in July.
A full season (injuries aside) for Inter Miami star Lionel Messi has helped MLS as well. Three teams had its largest crowds ever this season for game that involved Miami visiting town; Vancouver Whitecaps (51,035), New England Revolution (65,612) and Sporting Kansas City (72,610).
Atlanta United leads the league in average attendance with over 42,500 per match. This past weekend, both Toronto FC and Charlotte FC had crowds of over 30,000 and Atlanta and the New England both had crowds of over 40,000.
