Kansas City Current to Host 2024 Women’s Cup at CPKC Stadium
Event will include three international club sides plus host Current
Posted On: May 13, 2024 By :The Women’s Cup will expand in 2024 to a second event in the United States this summer when the Kansas City Current host three other international club sides at the new CPKC Stadium from August 14–17.
The four-team tournament will feature the hometown Kansas City Current, 2023 African Champion Mamelodi Sundowns, 2023 Copa de la Reina Champion Atlético de Madrid and Japanese club INAC Kobe Leonessa. The Kansas City tournament is the second Women’s Cup tournament in 2024, following the Louisville edition that started in 2021 and then expanded in 2022 and last year.
“We are excited to welcome the world to CPKC Stadium,” said Kansas City Current President Raven Jemison. “We have opened the stadium to sold-out crowds and incredibly exciting football and we can’t wait to host these world-class teams in Kansas City and show them why we are the Soccer Capital of America.”
The summer edition of The Women’s Cup will follow February’s Colombia event that featured Racing Louisville FC and reigning NWSL champions NJ/NY Gotham FC against Colombia’s América de Cali and Deportivo Cali. Gotham beat Racing in the TWC Colombia final. The 2024 U.S. tournaments are part of a new TWC Global Series with the champions of each event invited to play the Global Series Finals in February 2025 at a neutral site to be announced.
“CPKC Stadium will be an incredible place to expand The Women’s Cup in the USA,” said JP Reynal, TWC chief executive officer. “Women’s football is growing across the globe and we are excited to bring the world’s best together to compete and showcase the beautiful game.”
The tournament will open with Atlético de Madrid playing INAC Kobe on August 14 at 5 p.m. CT, with the Current facing the Sundowns at 8 p.m. CT. Semifinal winners will play August 17 at 8 p.m. CT with the consolation match kicking off at 5 p.m. CT.
