U.S. Olympic TV Rights Stays With NBC Through 2036
Agreement between IOC and Comcast NBCUniversal announced
Posted On: March 13, 2025 By :The IOC has signed a $3 billion deal with NBC for the 2034 Olympics and Paralympic Games in Salt Lake City and the 2036 Summer Games for which a host city has not yet been determined.
The extension of the media rights for the 2033–2036 cycle is valued at $3 billion. The agreement includes not only the media rights on all platforms in the United States for the Games through to 2036, but also new joint strategic initiatives and projects.
“Knowing nine years out that we will have the support of Comcast NBCUniversal is a real milestone for the 2034 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City-Utah,” said 2034 President and Executive Chair Fraser Bullock. “Since the Winter Games here in 2002, Comcast NBCUniversal has been an outstanding partner in telling the story of Olympic and Paralympic sport in America.”
The partnership, which was approved by the IOC Executive Board yesterday, will start in 2025 and takes the longstanding partnership between the IOC and Comcast NBCUniversal from media rights-holder to strategic partner.
“This agreement with Comcast is groundbreaking because it goes far beyond the traditional media rights agreement which we have had for many years with our valued partner,” said IOC President Thomas Bach. “Thanks to their innovative approach, serving on all platforms from linear to streaming and digital, we can now take our partnership to new heights for the benefit of athletes, Olympic stakeholders, organizing committees and fans.”
NBC signed its most recent Olympic rights deal in 2014 covering each Summer Games and Winter Games through 2032. That was valued at $7.75 billion. The new U.S. rights deal has been sealed one week before Bach’s successor is to be elected at an IOC meeting in Greece on March 20.
NBC has broadcast every Summer Olympics since 1988 and every Winter Games since 2002. A previous renewal in 2011 secured each games from 2014 through 2020 for $4.38 billion. The 2024 Paris Olympics set an advertising record, drawing more than $1.25 billion in ad commitments. On Peacock, Gold Zone emerged as a hit, providing a new way for streaming viewers to follow the action.
“There is no event like the Olympics. Its power to bring joy, and the unifying spirit it embodies, are truly unique,” said Comcast Chairman and CEO Brian Roberts. “We live in a time when technology is driving faster and more fundamental transformation than we’ve seen in decades. This groundbreaking, new, long-term partnership between Comcast NBCUniversal and the International Olympic Committee not only recognizes this dynamic but anticipates that it will accelerate.”
