2022 MLQ Championship Host Finalists Announced
Destinations in Texas, Maryland and North Carolina down to final determination
Posted On: January 12, 2022 By :The destinations of Round Rock, Texas, Howard County, Maryland and Goldboro, North Carolina, are the three finalists to host the 2022 Major League Quidditch Championship with the championship location to be announced in early February. Additionally, Rochester, New York, and Round Rock have been selected to host regular-season series.
Goldsboro has previously hosted a USQ Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship at the Bryan Multi-Sports Complex. Howard County was the host of the 2021 MLQ Championship at Troy Park.
Round Rock is already set to host an event in the regular season at the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex. Rochester, home to the Rochester Whiteout, has a long history of hosting quidditch. McAvoy Park, the expected site of a 2022 series, is a multipurpose facility with parking and bleachers.
The 2022 championship will have 12 teams from the U.S. and Canada battle for the Benepe Cup. The leading event organizers of quidditch earlier this year announced that they will seek to rename the sport that derives its name from the Harry Potter book series, citing concerns over controversial comments made by author J.K. Rowling and the limitation of being aligned with a specific work of intellectual property.
The joint announcement came from the leaders of U.S. Quidditch, a governing body of the sport in the United States, and Major League Quidditch, a 16-team league that represents the highest level of competitive play in North America. Both organizations said they will conduct surveys in the coming months designed to guide the process for a new name.
