The 2014 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic will take place at Michigan Stadium at the University of Michigan on New Years Day. The event, which will see the Detroit Red Wings take on the Toronto Maple Leafs, is expected to set a world record for attendance at a hockey game, with more than 110,000 people anticipated to attend. Additionally, an estimated 250,000 are expected to attend the Hockeytown Winter Festival in downtown Detroit.
“We’ve been excited about going to The Big House, and we’re glad that the plans are falling into place to do everything we originally planned to do and more,” said NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman.
The Red Wings and Maple Leafs were originally scheduled to play at Michigan Stadium for the 2013 Winter Classic, but the event was cancelled due to the NHL’s lockout.
